Men Without Women - Ernest Hemingway

This is Hemingway's second short story collection, published in 1927. It comprises of fourteen short stories, of various length and quality. Yet, overall it has the signature Hemingway style, a uniqueness irrespective of whether it is a novel or a short story that we read.

"The Undefeated" is a story of a Bull Fighter just released from hospital, who is not willing to hang his boots, irrespective of no one willing to give him a second chance. Hemingway describes in detail the various stages of  a Bull fight, and depending on the reader one may find  the reading effort a little tiring. Manuel, the bull fighter injures himself again. A touching story.

We come across  Nick Adams ( whom we met in Hemingway's first short story collection "In our time"), this time recuperating in Italy after the war. Despite its short length it presents a deep insight about how the soldiers look at  War, as well as how the locals look at a foreign Army. ( "In another Country")

In, "Hills like Elephants", we come across a very natural but agitated dialogue between a young man and a young girl, with the girl being quite upset and disconcerted about a certain "operation", that she is to have. For me, this was one of the highlights of this collection, if not one of Hemingway's best.

Next we come across the second Nick Adams story ( he is thought to be a fictional character inspired by the author's own experiences), "The Killers". A couple of  hit men come looking for a Boxer with the aim of killing him, and they  find Nick with his friend. The edgy not so friendly conversation between the hit men, and young men, as well as the boxer's own reaction when being told on the threat on his life, is what is attractive of the story.

"Che Ti Dice La Patria?", is a vignette of journey, with one man, a stranger to the passengers inside the car,  travels on the side board as well as how a policeman looks for an avenue to earn some money.

"Fifty Grand" is another of the highlight of this collection. A boxer, a family man, pulls "a fast one" on a betting scheme in a boxing match. It is a cross section of the character of the boxer; his thought process, his economy etc. as well as the realisation, that not only him ( who is painted to be close fisted man ), but most worry about the bottom line.

If someone wanted me to describe using one example, what a typical Hemingway short story is like, I'd show "A simple query". Military, where man is deprived of  many pleasures, is a place where many a man looks for alternatives. Even if we leave space for the protagonists' orientation, a layer of humanity is present in him which makes him think twice - although the poor lad may not be as lucky the next day.

We return to a Nick Adams story in "ten Indians". Nick is carrying on with a girl of Native American mix (i.e. Indian), and this story is about his father breaks some bad news to him. The subtly with which the father comes to break the news to his son, was the most attractive thing to me about this story.

"A Canary for One", has its own story based on the American woman's girl - her love being denied her - but the twist is in the last line. The American woman speaks of the suitability of an American girl marrying an American woman, but the last sentence which concerns the American couple is a prize winner;
"We were returning to Paris to set up separate residences."

Another Nick Adams story "An Alpine idyll" is more about the experiences of those reside in the remotest area of the Alps. Back then even a burial had to be postponed until the weather permitted it!

"A Pursuit Race" is, as typical with most Hemingway short stories, infers a lot than what  the text states. Campbell clearly is battling a habit, and is losing, but his manager seems to understand the other man's mindset.

"Today is Friday", is a play style vignette, with the crucifying of Jesus Christ as its base. Sparse, but the essential questions raised during the drinking session between the Roman soldiers, picture a skepticism as well as a concealed credulity in him. Inference to Maria Magdelena makes the creation, that much more interesting.

Banal story is the thoughts that a reader ( Hemingway ?) finds awakening in his mind, as he reads a paper. In once sense it is an experiment, while on another it could be looked upon as a cross section of the time the story was written in.

The last story of this collection is also a Nick Adams story. Again a war time story, it gives the impression of his fear of falling asleep. He reminisce about days gone by and his time with his parents, as he tries to postpone sleep. It is clear that Nick is recuperating.

Read on the immediacy of completing his first collection, "In our Time",  it is immensely enjoyable and largely of the same style as that. Yet, it is clear that Hemingway was attempting certain experiment and style variations. Overall the signature Hemingway style is attractive and appealing to the reader, to make him interested in the book, despite on occasions the minimalist style hardly gives anything away to to the reader.

Warlight - Michael Ondaatje

There is a quote attributed Michael Ondaatje, which goes as follows:

"The first sentence of every novel should be: Trust me, this will take time but there is order here, very faint, very human. Meander if you want to get to town." How true this is, especially  with respect to Ondaatje's own fiction ? Allow me to explain as I
try to share my feelings upon reading his latest novel, "Warlight", but with no 'spoilers' ( That's a promise!).

"this will take time..." Warlight cannot be rushed. No, even if you have a full day or two with just this book, you must savour - and not  rush it down.  In the case of Warlight, I knew I could probably read through the night on a Friday or a Saturday, for its beauty could make me do that. But once you start on this journey, each step of the way enriched with Ondaatje's unique style - always with the precise words, the subtle nuances which add to the taste of the reading experience - which the reader lingers on a moment longer,  she can't bring herself to put the book down, but yet cannot being herself to rush through it. It takes time, because it must take time to enjoy the beauty it holds.

"but there is order here..."  Oh! And what order ! What precise order in this jumble, this confusion, this chaos! The pieces make sense at a slow pace decided upon by Ondaatje - and the reader agrees, "oh! this is precisely when that confusion needed to be explained out", despite the puzzlement that has nagged her possibly over a hundred pages! Its the journey that makes the nagging part of the taste to be savoured. Ondaatje takes you on a meandering journey - in an old Morris car late at night across London, in a mussel boat on the Thames, in the fog, in the rain, and you are grateful to him for doing that, despite the dodgy characters, the dog breath, the hurt of the wronged kids, the cold, the drenched clothes. For this is a book in which the reader lives in, just like how  Ondaatje wanted it to be. The sheer beauty of the whole experience can make you emotional.

"very faint, very human..."  How Faint ? But oh, how human ? The only work of fiction I've read of Ondaatje before this was "The English Patient". And how human was that ? The  love story in it, started appearing through the wider fabric of a raging war scene - from Europe to the sub Saharan deserts. He pushed war to the background, despite the rich details about it that he presented. The reader came to realise a hidden  romantic tragedy arising out of the war landscape, almost as side effect. But that was the author's aim, all along.  And once that scene - that  evidence of human love for another, love of the strongest kind, for which any sacrifice is trivial, surfaces, the reader realises that it is only with the faintest of brush marks that Ondaaatje had done it. And she is ever so grateful for it. This expert trick, the art  to make the reader in to a  lateral focusing (if you will), that Ondaatje is wont to do ( he may have done it elsewhere, but this poorly read reviewer knows no better ) is present in all its glory, in Warlight too.  The genius of the author is, that this lateral view rises out of the detail of the background, the background he's been  elaborating, feeding minutely. Out of this landscape in the background rises the focused, and there can be no doubt that what the author wanted the reader to see, was the "late born" art - as late as last page of the novel, after she indulges in the full art, appreciating the full fabric of the art, the detail in all earnest and in appreciation. The Reader is wholly captivated. Here, Rose does the impossible, for love.  Which role does patriotism and bravery play here ? I cannot but agree with Rose's daughter in her stance towards her mother ( I hold back the detail to avoid 'spoilers'), however much I dislike it. Is Rose's love reciprocated ? Is there betrayal of the subtlest kind ( of which the reader would debate even when she closes the book ) ? Yet, most of this could be pure conjecture based on the fragments that Nathaniel could unearth ? How does the reader survive the book, once she realises that  cold, lonely feeling that was Rose's fate due to her conscious decisions ? And she doesn't get a reprieve - no, not from anyone! Cruel ! Beautiful !

"Meander if you want to get to town...." Digressions or what the reader initially feels as digressions, are part of Ondaatje's style. But later she realises that those weren't digressions - but meanderings - meandering which nurture the whole experience, which make the nuances stay in your mind, which make the reading experience haunt you for decades ( yes, it is more than a decade since I read "The English Patient" - it still haunts me ).

An aside; Why did Ondaatje write this book now ? Did he want to show that war didn't end for the affected ? That vengeance is in the mind of the 'wronged' ? Did he have the land he was born in, in some dark corner of his mind, as he decided on  post world war II Europe as a canvas, to portray this ?

I am impatient to read all of Ondaatje's books - yet, I cannot read them all in a rush. For just like the finest recipes are an experience to be savoured, his work I suspect is to be savoured. And savour all his work I will. If I held Dostoevsky, Naipaul, Hemingway and Forster as special writers to me, and Camus as my firm favourite all this while, Camus now has company!

The Connell Guide To T.S. Eliot's The Wasteland - Seamus Perry

This is the second book on Eliot's Wasteland that I've read over the last month. The objective in selecting and reading this book was, to ensure that I was getting a "real deal" reading Eric Ilayapaarachchi's translation, but more importantly the long essay on the poem. A quick google query showed Seamus Perry's new book as possibly the best book on Eliot's work, and I didn't hesitate to load my Kindle with a copy.
While Ilayapaarachchi's book was a line by line elaboration, Perry doesn't go to the extreme. Perry bases his book on a series of questions. Such as;
"What is wrong with April?'
"What is the waste land?"
What does the German mean?"
What is the Fire Sermon?"
"Who is Phlebas?" etc., in essence 11 such questions. This is
beside the questions he attempts to reply about the whole poem. e.g. "Is The Waste Land a pessimistic poem?" or "Do we need to spot the references?"

Let us come to the that last question. "Do we need to spot the references?". I say "yes" without a doubt, for this whole attempt to read this difficult poem ( It is a difficult poem, make no doubt about it. Perry also answers the question, "Why is The Waste Land difficult?" ). My point about the necessity of the references is accepted by the poet himself, for he himself not only added reference notes, but said of it;
"I gave the references in my notes, in order to make the reader who recognized the allusion, know that I meant him to recognize it, and know that he would have missed the point if he did not recognize it."
[ Perry, Seamus. The Connell Guide to T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land (Advanced Study Guide) . Connell Guides. Kindle Edition. ]

Eliot expected the reader to go that extra mile, for he has stated that: :
"it is to be expected that the reader of a poem should take at least as much trouble as a barrister reading an important decision on a complicated case."
[ Perry, Seamus. The Connell Guide to T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land (Advanced Study Guide) . Connell Guides. Kindle Edition. ]

So it was a consolation to know that myself as a reader hasn't been too careful in this whole exercise ( I continue, well pleased with myself);

The form of the poem: One thing wholly amiss in Ilayappaarachchi's poem is the deliberating that Eliot went to with the form -  the line breaks, why he was careful here with the grammar and intentionally casual about it there, the meters used. admittedly, Perry too mentions the metres just in passing and doesn't publish a study of it in the book sadly, but yet takes form quite seriously.

"'When lovely woman stoops to folly and
Paces about her room again, alone,
She smoothes her hair with automatic hand,
And puts a record on the gramophone.'
The small removal of “and” from the second line sends Goldsmith’s line off-kilter by adding an extra foot. It makes a mockery of the lesson so consequentially learned about “men” in the original:"
[Perry, Seamus. The Connell Guide to T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land (Advanced Study Guide) . Connell Guides. Kindle Edition. ]

The second reason why this book was valuable is because of the idea of the amount of editing that Ezra Pound has done to this poem. Eliot, upon completing the poem, got it edited by Pound, and Pound has taken off quite some fat, and some of the comments which he has made illustrates the level of confidence that he had on what he was doing. Some of the comments that Pound has used when cutting off certain lines illustrates this - "Bulshit". And Eliot, to his credit has largely accepted Pound's last word - although not on every account.

Then, there's this verse, from the poem:
"Unreal City
Under the brown fog of a winter noon
Mr. Eugenides, the Smyrna merchant
Unshaven, with a pocket full of currants
C.i.f. London: documents at sight,
Asked me in demotic French
To luncheon at the Cannon Street Hotel
Followed by a weekend at the Metropole"

There's an understanding, ( which proves to be a misunderstanding) that the invitation here for a weekend here is that of an amorous homosexual nature. It is taken for granted, obviously from other references, by Ilayapaarachchi. However,  Eliot admits his surprise of this plot.

"Plausibly, I think, Eliot reportedly declared himself unconscious of any specific homosexual implication: for the feeling of the lines is genuinely nonplussed, not knowing quite what is going on. (Who is to say the speaker at this point is not a woman?)"
[Perry, Seamus. The Connell Guide to T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land (Advanced Study Guide) . Connell Guides. Kindle Edition. ]

In conclusion, Perry's book adds so much insight about Eliot's poem, some of it possibly unique to this latest work ( its publication date is September - 2018). Having read just one book ( in English)  on the subject, I will not venture to say it is the best on the subject. Yet, there is some thought that the Oxford University's English teacher's book is the best on the subject. It is very readable, so much so that I often wondered if I am missing some of what Perry said - but it didn't seem to be so, for the presentation is straight forward enough.

However, I know that I wouldn't have gleaned the most about the poem if I had read only this book, despite the insights it offers. In that sense am glad, that Ilayapaarachchi published his essay ( which is twice the length of  Perry's work), for it was the combination of the two that gave me a wider comprehension of the poem. Essentially, I believe that Perry is an important read, once you are of the comprehension level availed by Ilayapaarachchi ( through his references of course).

April is the cruellest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.

"He, the young man carbuncular, arrives,
A small house agent’s clerk, with one bold stare,
One of the low on whom assurance sits
As a silk hat on a Bradford millionaire.
The time is now propitious, as he guesses,
The meal is ended, she is bored and tired,
Endeavours to engage her in caresses
Which still are unreproved, if undesired."
