A note on the Sinhala King Manawamma...

Reading P.B. Rambukwelle's Commentary on Sinhala Kingship ( Vijaya to Kalnga Magha ); The author reserves a special position for Manawamma ( AC 689-698), who once and for all rid the country of the mercenary menace that had been plaguing the country for over fifty years. However this was at the tail end of a dynastic strife that had been going on for over 200 years. Migara, the Senapati of Dhatusena,  is thought to be the starting point  of  the army's intervention in king making became significant.
"Of the 35 kings who ascended the throne during this period of 260 years ( Mahanama to Manavamma ) 18 came to violent ends, of whom 10 counted one or less than an year's rule, only 5 were ruled enthroned peacfully in succession to their respective predecessors, the rest, all 30 of them forcing their way to the throne." ( pages 57-58; P.B. Rambukwelle)
With Manavamma came a period of peace and good government for a period of three centuries. The period saw 26 kings, the 100th to the 125th in an unbroken line of Sinhala dynasty. After Manavamma, succession to the throne was peaceful, with each legitimate heir awaiting his turn on the natural demise of his predecessor. Manawamma is mentioned in Nilakanta Sastri's seminal work, "A History of South India", thus :
"... Narasimhavarman  defeated the Chalukyas in several battles including one  at Manimangala about 20 miles to the east of Kanchipuram. In these battles Narasimha was ably assisted by a Ceylonese prince , Manavarma, whom he afterwards helped to gain the throne of Ceylon" (page 136)
Manavamma, assisted by the Pallavas, became the king ridding the country of the mercenaries who had been marauding the country, since the locals had by then stopped getting involved in the centuries lasting battle for the throne. Manavamma, fresh with 20 years of battle experience, is thus recognized as instrumental in bringing upon a period of peace for three centuries. These three centuries saw long reigns - Aggabodhi IV ( 40 years), Sena II (35 years ), Mahinda V ( 35 years ) and Sena I (20 years ).

Another important observation that Rambukwelle makes is that there were stages in the development of the Sinhala monarchy -
gamani ( derived from the ideal of mahasammata), to sanghabodhi, to senasammata, to sena, to chakravarti - Parakramabahu I considered to be of this last stage ). Manavamma is considered the first Sena king - in contrast to Senasammata, head of the army by consent, to become the actual essence of power of the army - Sena ).

This note was made because the contribution by Manavamma is usually not given the due recognition, among the other kings who won against invaders and those who did a yeomen service in irrigation and the uplifting of the Sasana,

The Refugees - Viet Thanh Nguyen

Viet Thanh Nguyen gained world wide attention, when his debut novel of 2015, The Sympathizer, won the Pulitzer award for Fiction. Then, when a fellow reader recommended me of his subsequent short story collection, it was a matter of finding a fitting time to read it, given the juggling of multiple reads as is my wont, with hardly any making progress. But once I started reading it, it managed to capture my attention over and above an analysis of historical politics that am reading and even more than Atwood's Handmaid's Tale.

The eight stories here all capture the ghosts of a country that they have either fled from, or of a people who have rebuild their lives, under   a communist Vietnam. But both the peoples have ghosts of a  previous time haunting them. In the first short story, there is a literally a ghost, and the scars guilt of the survivor , with their experiences while fleeing, with the horror detailed ("Black Eyed Woman"). It brought back the memories of the  terrors enclosed in his masterpiece of a novel.

"The Other Man", takes another angle of those sponsored by a Rich American, with the words gay sugar daddy coming to mind. The  beneficiary's gratefulness is a weight for him to carry, burdened with  guilt.

"War Years" shows us that some of those who came over to the US, never stopped fighting the war against the Communists, and couldn't come to terms with their losses - instead living on day after day, in a self-made equation that makes their survival, tolerable and hopeful. The closing scene of how an usually close fisted  mother allowing  her son to buy anything he wants from a 7-Eleven store,  shows the reader her then thoughts of cherishing those near  her, while she can ( comparing with  Mrs. Hoa of what she has endure day in day out). Its a  masterful scene, bringing with it weight that pages couldn't add.

The author brings in an element of humour along with a glimpse of the kind of business opportunities that are available- dealing in counterfeit goods -to segments of certain immigrant communities. Here the main character is an American Mexican in Orange Country, CA, addicted to gambling and wasting his time away, and who's had a liver transplant from a Vietnamese. In his attempt to find the donor of the organ, this short story titled "The Transplant" shows a cross section of two immigrant communities who have found ways of living, dealing and mingling with each other, in this multi-cultural metropolis.

"I'd love you to want me", is possibly one of the best love stories I've ever read. It captures  A love of such depth, portraying selflessness as an essential ingredient while taking care of  her Alzheimer's affected husband.

In "The Americans", our author shows that the mentality of superiority  an American, a veteran, is now outdated, and even his own child will not condone  that thinking. The story happens in Vietnam. There is also a reference to Sri Lanka in this story, although not for good reasons. It says that the robotic mechanism used for de- mining was already in use, in SL.

Children could carry baggage, in terms of parental behaviour, far into their adulthood.  In "Someone else beside you", a father who that dictated over the lives of his children, returns as in a bad dream,  to his now grown son.  It brings  unexpected yet  rewarding results for his son, now a grown man with a broken marriage.

The story of Vivien, who likes his father's second wife's family to believe that she's been living the American dream, since she went there as a refugee with the mother. The truth is not so pretty, as she later divulges. "Fatherland" is a short story that most of the Asian countries can relate to, when it comes to putting up appearances with so called "success stories" in their new homes.

There is not a single weak story here. Yet there is a common strand a high level theme - where the members were victim of communism, when North Vietnamese armies gained control over the South. Most of the characters are those who fled in life threatening circumstances to the U.S. There are a few characters, who stayed back,  being focused on too.  The author can relate to these stories, as he states in the acknowledgements section, thus:
Thanks to my father and mother, Joseph and Linda. Refugees in 1954 and again in 1975, they are the most courageous people I know. They saved my life.
Thanks to my older brother, Tung, the original refugee success story. Seven years after arriving in the United States, he went to Harvard. He sets a high standard.
Thanks to Lan Duong, my fellow refugee, writer, and partner. A reader of my every word, she has shared both the suffering and the joy.
Thanks to our son, Ellison, for reminding me of childhood. By the time this book is published, he will be nearly the age that I was when I became a refugee.

This is easily one of the best books I've read this year.

Judas - Amos Oz

( Translated from the Hebrew by Nicholas de Lange )
(Finalist - Man Booker International Award 2017 )

I think I came across the word "Traitor" for the first time, while I was reading Enid Blyton's "The Rat-a-Tat mystery", as a kid. I didn't know the meaning of the term and referred my father's dictionary to look it up. Since then I've come across the term many more times than I would've cared for - especially its Sinhala equivalent. While I don't pretend to be so broad minded as to dismiss the term to be  of an absurd meaning, I do concede that its  application is valid only within a context, and hence relative. We are but mostly small men at most times, and in such a world as we live in,  a man could be labelled a traitor or a tag of treason could be removed, posthumously. This book is about two traitors, so called. A exposition into the historical character of Judas Iscariot, who is said to have betrayed Jesus Christ, and the fictitious Shealtiel Abravanel, whose idea of Zionism didn't include waging a war for a separate nation for the Jews. It is safe to believe that this book is one that is close to the author's heart, as he himself has been labelled thus, due to his stance on the security and political concerns of his nation

So how does the book flow?
Enter, Shmuel, University drop out, dumped by his girl friend, asthmatic and alone in his world for all practical purposes, who finds himself the ideal job for a period of semi-hibernation, as he tries to reevaluate his life. Meet Atalia, attractive widow of 40 something, Shealtiel's daughter in law, from his late son's marriage - mysterious and  scornful of Shmuel - at times, at least. Shmuel's job is to be a companion to talk to Gershom Wald, Atalia's father in law. Put these people in one house, close the doors, maybe the windows too and  keep all visitors out. Once in the house, we have several tangents of conversation on the Jew's attitude towards Jesus Christ, the split opinions about nationhood between Gershom, and Shmuel with his socialist leanings, Shmuel's infatuation on Atalia which she mostly scorns, and the private worlds of these three people, to which a few windows are opened, once in a while.

.

While the main theme focuses on the possibility that if there was no Judas, there wouldn't have been Christianity and his devotion may have made him the first and possibly only true Christian, it also conceded that he has earned the wrath of millions,  since history has judged him harshly. This position is explored at depth - either through conversations between Wald and Shmuel, or a few peeps into Shmuel's former masters' thesis subject - how to Jews considered Jesus Christ.
“How ironic it is, Shmuel wrote in his notebook, that the first and last Christian, the only Christian who did not abandon Jesus for a moment and did not deny him ... the only one whose heart was truly broken by Jesus’s death, is the one who has been considered, by hundreds of millions of people on five continents and over thousands of years, the archetypal, the most heinous and most despicable, Jew. As the incarnation of treachery, the incarnation of Judaism, the incarnation of the connection between Judaism and betrayal.”
In parallel Amos presents the views of Shealtiel's, through the words of Wald, and his daughter, about how Zionism could've been possible without  nationalism, which has started a war - a war that he never wanted but which made his daughter a widow, and stopped what might have been  a  promising career as a professor in Mathematics, for his son in law.

"He was firm in his view that Zionism could not be achieved through confrontation with Arabs, whereas I had understood by the end of the forties that it could not be achieved without some such confrontation."
These conversations make for a read that makes one evaluate one's own beliefs. The arguments that he presents for and against Israel, are so naturally etched into the fabric of the novel, that it doesn't come out convoluted. For  three months or so,Shmuel lives in a kind of a self willed prison, by some  people who have paid dearly for the beliefs that they held, or against the beliefs they held, since the times that they lived in gave them hard choices - maybe, no choices. Shmuel, himself at a juncture in life, undecided, lost, yearns, loves, loses, but gets a chance for a fresh start at the end of the period of hibernation. And the way that Amos Oz, has made the reader an invisible resident of that gloomy house with its  wall of willows, the residents living out the rest of their lives, for what else are they to do. It is as near a modern masterpiece as it gets, and I have no hesitation in stacking this with two other great novels I read very recently - Michael Ondaatje's Warlight, and Lincoln in the Bardo, by George Saunders.

Amos lost out to David Grossman, in 2018 as the latter won the Booker International award. I rate "Judas", above "The Horse...", for the overall completion and the width of the novel of the former, against one man's admission of defeat, however bitterly the author had manage to  capture it all in ( as presented in the latter.)
