Lolita - Vladimir Nabakov

Lolita, written by the Russian-English author Vladimir Nabakov, is considered one of the best novels ever.  It has been in various “best novels” lists. It was seeing it  in many such lists, that made me pick it up many years ago – and I eventually read it, recently. Written on a subject considered taboo, the narrator, Humbert Humbert’s wry humour, subtle descriptions of sex with his obsessive nymphets’ - using ironically  the most decorous language imaginable, certainly makes for a treat for the lover of literature. It was a slow read for me, as I went through, grinning at the wry humour at times, shocked at the disclosures at others, the rigmarole of justifications at times of his actions, at certain others. Here is one  excerpt; the first of which is his identification of one of his precious nymphets:

“You have to be an artist and a madman, a creature of infinite melancholy, with a bubble of hot poison in your loins and a super-voluptuous flame permanently aglow in your subtle spine (oh, how you have to cringe and hide!), in order to discern at once, by ineffable signs―the slightly feline outline of a cheekbone, the slenderness of a downy limbs, and other indices which despair and shame and tears of tenderness forbid me to tabulate―the little deadly demon among the wholesome children; she stands unrecognized by them and unconscious herself of her fantastic power.”

I am sure this excerpt is enough to ignite in those who love the finely written word, of what the reader may expect within these pages.

Here is another excerpt which hints at what the narrator may have been up to, unknown to his fantasized , in a chance encounter. The sheer finesse with which “the dirty” is narrated, is amazing.

"I felt proud of myself. I had stolen the honey of a spasm without impairing the morals of a minor. Absolutely no harm done. The conjurer had poured milk, molasses, foaming champagne into a young lady's new white purse; and lo, the purse was intact."

If one analyses the characters created and presented in this work, although all of them are presented from the point of view of Humbert,  with his impression of them serving as a modulator, the reader gets the impression that the man is a fair judge of characters. But then he has to be, given how closely his observes, as the example of his identification of a nymphet quoted above  prove. For example here’s how he sees Jean, a character of little consequence in the book:

“She was very tall, wore either slacks with sandals or billowing skirts with ballet slippers, drank any strong liquor in any amount, had had two miscarriages, wrote stories about animals, painted, as the reader knows, lakescapes, was already nursing the cancer that was to kill her at thirty-three, and was hopelessly unattractive to me.”

The way he describes his wife, a union of opportunity is further proof of this.

The narrator successfully paints himself most absurd , at times most incompetent ( i.e. the finale of the book, where he has his revenge, and how difficult it was to achieve it, even when his target was a sitting duck ) and the intellectual depth he immerses to justify his orientation – yet, the guilt raising its head every now and again, at which times the narrator almost implores the readers to look at his case his with just eyes, with a little flexibility – maybe more than a little – thrown in for good measure.

This is, to a certain degree a road trip novel, and to a larger level it deals with the psychological makeup of how a pedophile would go about reaching towards his goals. The fact that the man in question is an intellectual, and describes the details of his conquest, his loss, his revenge  and his fall without an iota of crudity, and from start to end is narrated in a language of such exquisite finesse, which I felt was almost beyond a non-native speaker of the language, makes this an all important book in many fronts. The main point is the taboo subject no doubt – but this book has much, much more to offer than that controversial subject.

Sleeping on Jupiter - Anuradha Roy

One of the books I read recently was the DSC award winner for 2016, Anuradha Roy’s “Sleeping on Jupiter”.  Former DSC award winners include Shehan Karunatilaka’s Chinaman and Jhumpa Lahiri’s The Lowland. Complimented by it  being a long list nominee of the Man Booker, I felt that it could be a worthy read, thus  my choosing it to read.

Upon completing it, I must confess that the resulting feelings are somewhat a mixed bag.  But I suspect that my  judgement is somewhat prejudiced, in what the traditionalist within me would expect out of a book. True that it is written in beautiful language. True that it has so many strands of intrigue simultaneously kept alive, and that they are interwoven adequately, if at a time predictably,  to make the book quite a page turner. Yet,  considerable strands remain loose ends by the time I finished reading the last page. Thus, what we encounter is experiences of a half a dozen or more people, over ten days or so ; plus glimpses into past. Nomi who is trying to come to terms with her life, torn apart early in life due to political violence and abuse at a Hindu Ashram where she’s brought to seek refuge;  The ladies in their sixties (Vidya, Latika, Gauri ), past their days of  responsibilities as mothers, but each encountering their own battles – Dementia, dead husbands, unfaithful husbands, bygone successes, bygone affairs ; the young man Badal living a hard life after his father’s death, and whose main immediate goal in life is to win over a young man whom he desires; the middle aged man, Suraj the professional cameraman, his life in total disarray, trying hard to find a path of sanity. Amongst these many characters what is abundant is the essential quality of restlessness, that of each fighting their battles, the sense of insecurity and isolation  that pervades most people in modern times. I felt that it is these feelings that Roy wanted to emphasize and draw attention to. It is this life within life that they seek while they go through the motions of their daily lives. Within these 250 or so pages, it is these characters, all with a past, all journeymen, all unsure what tomorrow will bring them or where they want to go with their lives. The experiences of these people certainly have the grains for a wonderful novel with an interesting plot – yet, that mayn’t have been the authoresses’ reckoning. Thus my verdict (if I may use such a strong term) to identify this book as one  with many loose ends, which never gets tied up. For example how  the crimes that took place at the Ashram were exposed, other than the possible role that Nomi played to expose it – that itself is not a fact, for it is unlikely that the revelations by a helpless girl will bring to law the highly connected and the influential priests, sadhus and monks. Another example is the fate of Gauri - what happens to her. May be it is the authoresses way of arguing for a continuation of chaos in the lives of these characters.

Hence it is but a traditional reader, expecting a near complete story, with his innate prejudices about a story line reaching a reasonable completion, who is left somewhat out in the cold as the book ends. He calls it a “good-to-very good book” ( three and a half stars ), where a more educated or more modern reader may call it a very good book awarding  it four stars. It is in this particular sense that I would appreciate the responses about  this book, by those who have read this already and those who plan to read it. To those who plan to read I can guarantee that this book is indeed an intriguing one – albeit an incomplete one – but then maybe that’s my prejudice at play. Tell you what ? Read it and tell me whether I am. To paraphrase the title of a classic George Michael album – “Read without Prejudice” , and tell me about the book, and that will tell me something about my prejudices about what I expect from a book.

Tess of the D'Urbevilles - Thomas Hardy

One of the books I “Read” through an audio book recently, was Thomas Hardy’s “Tess of D’Urbervilles”. The second book from the author I have read  ( after “Far from the Maddening Days”), I selected  it, seeing that “Tess” was rated as the best of the author’s books, on an  online rating  of his books.

Hardy gives the novel an ethereal feel (again – it is probably his signature ), with many a splendid description of the rural life, which again is the platform for his narration. Be it a winding misty mountainous road, dairy farming, harvesting or long journeys on foot, Hardy is at his fabric, lifting the reader effortlessly into that environment, complimented by a language of such finesse, albeit hinting of the last stages  of a romantic era. As is to be expected the unfolding of the novel takes it’s own time, as best suited to this unhurried narration, from an unhurried era, told in an unhurried language.  It is a book that doesn’t fail in creating the mood of  the environment in the reader’s minds’ eye, plus the sense of the tragic which hover from start to end.  From the moment of the realization of  Tess’s parents’ relative simple mindedness , to her sad end, things go downhill, which if placed on a numerical scale to present the mood, starts from naught, and descends into the negative scale till the very end, until it cannot possibly descend no more.

Yet, this book is rated high, for reasons besides it’s tragic. Given the era of it’s creation, it questions the elevated place of the Church, some of the dogmatic views that it holds , of course in a finesse that even a holder of that belief cannot but awe at it’s presentation within the narration. The beauty in its presentation is such that the genuineness of Rev. Clair is never in doubt. His commitment to the teachings, his austerity and dedication to his duty is presented in all fairness. The dogmatic nature of some its’ teachings are questioned, by his son Angel, being of a questioning mind frame unlike his siblings.  Hardy captures the debacle between those well endowed with faith, and those of a more rational mind frame. For all the rationality that Angel is nurtured with, he cannot accept the sad fate that had befallen Tess.  The exact words that Angel uses, when asked insistently whether she is forgiven is:

‘O Tess, forgiveness does not apply to the case! You were one person; now you are another. My God—how can forgiveness meet such a grotesque—prestidigitation as that!’

This shock, is too much for Angel to comprehend, and it is this, which is at the root of Tess’s subsequent plight. It cannot be argued enough that a more faith driven individual like his father may have given Tess more compassion, which his faith makes it his nature. Angel Clare doesn’t have the mental state of a religious person to forgive such a circumstance. This, while he is susceptible to faults that of a sinning man. Then again the forgiveness of a religious minded person, and the forgiveness expected from a lover may quite be different things, and may not be compatible with each other. Even so, a religion driven person may have found it easier to overcome the shock, and accept Tess for who she is now discovered to be.

I read in certain reviews that this book is looked upon as one challenging the religious climate of the era. It may seem to challenge it in a superficial way, but deep down, when analyzing how Angel Clair reacts, how his usual fair mindedness and rationality find it difficult to rise up to task, I suspect that Hardy may have subtly promoted the richness of a religious mindedness person, to serve life’s challenges, against one who is not so endowed with such a faith.

All in all, an absorbing read.  I for one fully endorse the rating by the fore-mentioned site, that “Tess” rates higher than “maddening crowd”, and I liked Far from the Maddening Crowd quite a lot, and think highly of it too. That should say something about this book.
