Beggar Maid: Stories of Flo and Rose(1)

Giraya - Punyakante Wijenaike

Punyakante Wijenaike (1933-2023), is considered one of the early fiction writers in English, from Sri Lanka. She started publishing her work back in 1963 ( she had started writing when she was 27), at a time when writing in English was the unpopular thing to do, especially after the Sinhala only movement having such currency just a few years back. I think the main reason that she became a house hold name back in the 1980s was the adoption of her novel, Giraya, to a Sinhala tele-drama, by that master producer, the late Lester James Peries. Back as a teenager I have watched that tele-drama, and it also introduced to most of us, the much respected business leader Peter D'Almeida in the lead role of Lal. Although that teledrama had a relative happy ending, the novel had a twist which raised its level in my eyes of Punyakante as an author - which, in turn, encouraged one of excesses - which is, purchase copies of the author's other work in the market ( which were somewhat difficult to find.)  However, it was the recent passing away of the author, which prompted me to take my copy of Giraya for reading.

The novel could be looked upon from two perspectives. The first is Kamini's single handed battle to win over rights as a wife, to wedge in a chance for youth and modernity from the stranglehold of the previous generation (i.e. her mother in law) and old conservative ways. I sense the choice of her name as indicative of the change that is being promoted against an incumbent religious out look on life, which is the way of the life in the manor house. Punyakante, has made such inferences, which makes the book that much more brilliant.

"We came upon another husking coconuts. Into the brown earth he had driven an iron spike, the gleaming point turned cruelly towards the sun. He too was bare-bodied except for the loin cloth and he had tied a turban about his head and with intense concentration, brought it down on the spike. There was a piercing, tearing sound. One vicious twist of the hapless fruit and the husk loosened its hold on the nut within its womb. But the nut did not fall out. He attacked the other side of it. The third segment was removed by hand. The whole operation had taken only a few seconds and now the fruit lay on the earth without its protective shell."

Although Kamini may have won the battle, ultimately she loses the war, as there was much more than she initially read into, in the situation. This is where there is a difference between the novel, and the tele-drama, and the novel wins clearly for its darkness, hopelessness, and the deception that Kamini finds herself in. There is no doubt that Kamini is subtle, and plotting, as Lal reads her like an open book, when the damage is done. The beauty for me was Kamini's realisation at the end, once the dark secrets of the manor house surfaces to the top, that her actual saviours were those she fought. The parentage of Sugath is also hinted as in some doubt, especially after Lal's final outburst - a point however that is never doubted by Kamini. The conviction of Kamini was strong enough to dilute Lal's doubt, in my eyes.

All in all, it is a first rate psychological novel, set in a very Sri Lankan environment back in the 1950s. I have no hesitation in rating this among the best fictional works by I've read from Sri Lankan authors writing in English (e.g. Bringing Tony home, In My Kingdom of the Sun by Tissa Abeysekara, Stories by Charulatha A. Thewarathanthri, The Chinaman, and The Seven Moons of Mali Almeida). I have, over the last few days upon completing Giraya, purchased six other books from the author, including her Gratien award winning "Amulet".

Life, Memento Mori, and Reflections

"Tired of lying in the sunshine, staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long, and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun"
                                                                           ( Time - Pink Floyd)

If someone asked me what is the most cruel thing about life, I'd say its how it is paced - not too short to make dash for things you want in life, and not long enough to savour the hard gotten things, as much as you like.

Its a few days after my 48th birthday, and am listening to the new Depeche Mode album, "Memento Mori" - an album which they started with Andy Fletcher, but finished with a title clearly that has much to do with his passing, and a reminder of their days left. However, it is hoped that Gahan and Gore will release more music before they call it a day. Being around sixty years of age, that is naturally to be expected ( and Fletcher's passing was somewhat untimely). However I think it is obvious that some of the bands, parallel to their hey days, we spent our youth in, are on their last phase. Hopefully Depeche Mode can dish out one, if not two before they retire. Peter Gabriel is finally releasing  I/O, an album which was over 20 years in the making. Last year Tears for Fears released "The Tipping Point", an excellent album, which could very well be their last. Robert Smith of The Cure has promised us a new album this year, and the new Metallica album is just to be released - and it safe to expect one or two albums from them too. Tool released "Fear Innoculum" a few years back, and hopefully we'll hear more music from despite them taking forever between albums, and the excellent Danny Carey's advancing years.

Looking back, I can recall the first music that I heard of each of these artistes. Songs of Faith and  Devotion was big when it came out in 1993. "I feel you" hit the air waves via TNL, and MTV. Although I had no occasion to listen to the album as a whole, "walking in my shoes", and the hit single "its no good" from  from Ultra convinced me to listen to "Exciter" (2001), when I had the facilities to listen to the full album. I've listened to all subsequent albums, and have gone back on their discography and collected most of their albums on CD, but Exciter to date is more special to me than their other albums.

The story is similar for other artistes too. Peter Gabriel's  "Steam" as the starting song on one of the music award shows, and the better "digging in the dirt" made a deep impression - which I caught in a friend's 'best of' Rock album that was available back then. Now am a huge fan of his early albums, especially "Peter Gabriel" - ( ok, 1, "car" album to be precise) as well as "Up". "Friday, I'm in love" was huge, and I've caught up with The Cure's full discography, since. Tears for Fears became a  big name, a little before my teen years, and hence their hits were familiar songs by the time I reached them. I have their early big albums on CD now. "Lateralus" blew me away, when it came out in 2001. But Stink Fist has made an impression on me a few years prior via Z-Rock 40, so that I didn't hesitate to procure a copy in an unlikely place, when I stumbled upon it.

Other than Gabriel ( and some members of Tool), most of others that I mentioned here are no more that 12-15 years my senior, and are in the last leap of their long careers. Each of the artistes I have mentioned here are very special to me, as I moved from my youth to middle age, in absolutely no time, wondering "hey, what the fuck happened ? I was, like 29, yesterday".

There are others whose whole careers coincide with my passage from youth to middle age - namely Radiohead - every bloody album of theirs , Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains ( including the painful passing of Layne), and Nirvana - Kurt, and Sound Garden's Cornell. Seeing old videos of some of these who are no longer with us, make me realise what huge impressions they made, and the gap they've left behind. I felt this most when watching old footage of  Scott Weiland - some of dance moves live, and his remarkable stage antics. Men (and women) who lived their lives as they believed they ought to, however much troubled, they may have been in their somewhat brief lives ( Kurt -27, Winehouse -27,  Layne - 34, Weiland - 48, and Cornell - 52 ).

After living the life to the music of these bands, these days I find that the music that impresses me is few and far between, as the music scene has changed so much. Recently Rick Beato did a YouTube clip called "Why do we stop listening to our favourite albums" ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwzrct0X4LM ) - well, I for one haven't, but I do get the drift that Rick attributes to. For these are bands that produced music in parallel to various stages of my life. I had a copy of Pearl Jam's vs. made via a CD-to-tape recording, along with a tape copy of 'ten', for me to keep me company during my Advanced Levels. The first CDs I bought were Alice in Chains' "three legged dog", and "August and Everything After", by Counting Crows (during my years of higher studies), since the tape I had till the second half of the 90s had run its course to its "tape suicide" in a deck, with all its tape intestines poured out. I got an original CD copy of OK computer within weeks of its release, and purchased CDs via CD Now, and later Amazon, at a time when the exchange rate made it feasible, and I was making a little money. I was still with my parents, and I could spend what I made, on music. Come the new millennium, the fortunes changed, as my father fell ill, and Tool's Lateralus was my favourite album on the year of his passing. By this time pirated copies of CDs were very common, and I must confess that was a good thing, along with Napster and other peer file sharing mechanisms, as the new conditions didn't leave much extra cash. I think the years 2005 to 2010 were the years that I was mostly distant from music, as I had to relocate after marriage leaving my hi-fi and the CD collection. While I did listen to most that was coming out from my favourite bands, I had little time to explore new music. After 2010 I caught up with most of the albums that preceded my youth, as I caught up with the back catalogs of most bands - The Cure, Depeche Mode, R.EM., Black Crows, Rolling Stones, Genesis,  Fleetwood Mac - I could go on and on, - as well as what I had missed out on in that 2005-2009 period. - as unlimited internet in an overseas posting made the vistas open. Come the mid 2010s, Music groups in facebook etc. made me knowledgeable about bands that I was not aware of before, and some of the favourite albums from recent years have been from bands that I learned of, through them ( Wide Awake - Parquet Courts - 2019; CRAWLER- IDLES - 2021 ). Over the last couple of years,  streaming music has made me go less and less to my hi-fi. It is only when I want to yank up the volume once in a while, as I power the old monster - my 25 year old NAD  amp, as against settling for  Spotify on my Bluetooth Bose.

Such has been the passage of life from, 14 or 15, to 48, always with music by my side. The journey has been too brief for my liking, although there is no doubt it has been wonderful. I am in my middle age and and some special people have contributed to this ever expanding list of artsites - as they introduced them to me - Abul Hasan, Eshanth, Mirshad, and facebook group like Music buffs cannot be forgotten.  By today, my teenage sons love their music, but I reckon they are in the process of discovering more and more. One likes Coldplay's first two albums most, and was surprised to learn that the chorus from an Eminem song ( the title of which I do not know) has been copied from Aerosmith's Dream on- a song so old, that their own father was not born at the time of its release.  My youngest - at 10, identifies Solsbury Hill and Diggin' in the dirt as among his favourites - making his dad very proud.

By the time I finish typing this in, the third round of Memento Mori has just started playing, and Gahan sings,
"Don't play with my world
Don't mess with my mind
Don't question my spacetime
My cosmos is mine"

The Lincoln Highway - Amor Towles

I read "A Gentleman in Moscow" simply because my book worms were going all crazy over it. I found an audio book  which fitted the purpose, and I must admit it was an excellent read. When "The Lincoln Highway" was announced, its title suggesting a novel bound to an American road trip, I was definitely going to read it.

So read it I did, a year or so delayed from my initial plan.

How does it read ?

Well, it clearly is  a page turner - and an adventure, with the Zeno's paradox serving as a possible underlying fundamental essence. This is the main thing about the book - the underlying essence, and what the author had in mind as his broader knowledge base, using which he authored a book, which if one is not careful could be found as a set back from his glory of "A Gentleman in Moscow". ( For those who've read the book, please read this - https://www.amortowles.com/the-lincoln-highway-q-and-a/ - but those who haven't and are planning to - stay away from the Q&A with the author ) But having read the Q&A, there are more things beneath the surface - Why 1954 ? Popular music being Tony Bennet, Perry Como, and Nat King Cole, with Rock n' Roll probably still be conceived. The first issue of the Play boy magazine was not yet published, and the birth control pill was still seven years away from approval - So in essence, Rock n' Roll, and Sex, was still not heard of, and treated from a conservative point of view, especially among teenagers. This book focuses mainly on teenagers - and how their mixed backgrounds carry them with different ethos, which they have inherited from their families - largely dysfunctional. Hence the back ground, with the way of thinking of these youngsters may suggest to readers of a rather conservative and God fearing, praying back ground. Once the reader realizes that these societal background, albeit unfamiliar by today's standards, was important to be reflected as it was in the novel, a renewed respect for the novelist cannot be helped.

The fact that each of these kids had a major portion of their ethics integrated into them by their parents is an important aspect. (Maybe it is relatively less today, with children being open to media and information from an early stage - which in effect keeps the parents too in check.) Emmett Watson has a deep rooted habit of not asking for advice or direction, which is the fault which saw his father becoming a failure, before his death. His treating of the very earnest Sally, is probably an indication of how his father treated the mother too, as gender discrimination is clearly suggested. Duchess had a dangerous portion of his father's ethics (or the lack of it), and his "ledger" of debt vs. credit on actions was soon to land him in trouble anyway. Although duchess wasn't from Nebraska, ( and the Watsons were) the serial killings by Chalres Starkweather, with him taking law on to his hands for being bullied in school was just five years in to the future ( See Nebraska by Bruce Springsteen, and the related incidents), is such an indication.

Am not sure, that the cultural background and its contemporary ethos,Towles had in mind when writing this novel will be transferred to all readers, unless they do a little home work, upon completion of the book. The more the reader spends time to understand that, the more meaningful the book will become besides being a coming of age adventure, with  a few cliche incidents testing the reader at times. But hey, possibly the writing style too is heavily influenced from the adventure fiction of a by gone era !

Best of 2022 ( music albums)

Ok, I've finally managed to compile a list of my favourite albums for 2022 (yeah, nobody gives a fuck - but hey, its my profile). The total number of albums listened to, was around 78, which is a steep rise from my usual 45-50 per year - thank to spotify.

The list looks somewhat like an alternative albums chart, except for the stalwarts like Red Hot Chili Peppers and Tears for Fears ( shocked that the rest of the world virtually paid little attention to that album) - and a couple more old timers ( Kula shaker - from where did they reappear? - and Bush ? I never really liked them, back then ) Two jazz albums feature in the top 30 too, and the Snarky Puppy album is a gem despite its 90 minute run time.

Speaking of running time - I think 35 minutes to 40 minutes is ideal, and most of the best ones here clock under 45 minutes.

Some of my usual favourites don't feature in the top 30 - which includes Eddie Vedder, both albums by Jack White ( and I was waiting for them ), and Bruce Springsteen ( whose covers album was only so-so, other than the obvious hit single - night shift). The two heaviest albums that I listened to too, miss the top 30 ( Meshuggah, and Ghost), as does Megadeth. At least one album proved to be beyond me - Bjork's Fossora. She becomes less accessible with each album, but I am almost 90% sure, the limitations are mine. Muse's album I thought was quite terrible, and it hangs on to the tail end. Bonnie Raitt and Def Leppard had decent albums, but I guess I've moved on - although I really must listen to Bonnie's grammy winning song once again, one of these days.

So now we look upon 2023 - the much anticipated stawarts, of course, and my favourites, Peter Gabriel, Depeche Mode, The Cure for example. But then let the bands that are out there, that I still know nothing of, surprise me - like Wet Leg, White Lung, Dawes, and Cola did this year.

Open Secrets - Alice Munro

My annual literature date with the old laughing lady - and the book that I had to read back in December last year was Open Secrets. At the time of my completing the reading I gave this 4 stars. Now writing my little notes, revisiting these stories again, albeit at a glance, I am convinced that this clearly a five star read - and my usual reluctance with giving away starts ( which my book worm friends always speak of - and I never own up to), has had the better of me.

So here are blurbs about the short stories found here. While these aren't quite spoilers, I must grant they come close to them, in my attempt to analyse the deeper meaning within each of the story, and for the curious, these should serve as an interest creator to find out more on what exactly is going on here.

Carried Away: Its a brilliant story focusing on the life of the protagonist, Louisa, and the three men we meet during the course of the story. Communication, or the lack of it is a main factor in the story, as the pivotal incidents take place unplanned - her experience with Jim Frarey as she laments the death of Agnew, whose epistle based long distanced love gave meaning to her life for sometime, as well as her marriage with Doud. It was interesting to note, that when Louisa in her old age imagines meet one of her old loves, it is the long dead Agnew that she imagines, and not one of the two men who had an actual physical presence in her life.

A Real Life: What's the real life that Millicent has in mind ? Is it the same as what Alice subtly seem to suggest in her unique way ? Millicent likes to convince herself that her present sexless life, in which she likes to think her husband too has given up certain things, is near a real life as it were. But Dorrie in her near wild life and her frankness about it, wins the favour of Wilkie - possibly the first man, and an outsider she'd seen in sometime. If we're to believe the communication between Dorrie and Millicent, upon the former's migration, Dorrie has had a near 'real life' in her new home too. Or, Dorrie too has started to believe that she too now has a 'real life', and she wants to convince her old friend that the marriage that she pushed Dollie into was the best thing ever. Maybe Dollie believes it - or wants to believe it.

The Albanian Virgin: We meet the Albanian virgin, in a story as it were from Charlotte, who frequents the book shop of our protagonist, Claire. This virgin is not a virgin in the sense that we have to believe, or understand. Claire herself is trying to find a life of her own after a separation from her husband. Beneath the story of the Albanian virgin, and that of Claire, we see two sides of wants from two women. While Charlotte fantasizes running away from her Albanian husband, as how "the Albanian virgin" finally escapes the clan that she was kept it, Claire at times longs for Donald, her estranged husband, or her lover Nelson. Claire imagines life with Nelson, where she would stick with her, amidst tensions and challenges in a long term relationship. The story overall suggests the insatiable nature of man, and woman, and how urges in sensuality makes both sexes to live a life which in the final analysis is aim towards long term stability, but across disruptions that desire bring in like pit falls.

Open Secrets: Based loosely on a disappearance of a girl, during an the annual hike, led by a woman who had overcome physical challenges in her youth, the story hints on multiple occasions on the sexual tendencies of the  residents of the town. The lawyer who's had a late rejuvenation, gives his wife, our main protagonist, gives her something she's being denied. In contrast we see Heather, running away towards what she wants. We are left on the lurch of what happened to her. But the open secrets are the sexual tendencies of women, and men, which the town keeps mum about, but which affects their lives. Johnson, who leads the hike, is portrayed as asexual, and somewhat of a respected figure, but the inference is that she has to be content with the collective respect, genuine or otherwise, of the town's folks.

The Jack Randa Hotel: is a rather entertaining story, of how a woman crosses thousands of miles to win back the man she's lost to a much younger artiste woman, and takes a form of  fiction through many epistles. Just as Will is about to come back to Gail, she exposes the female nature of him of playing hard to get, suggesting that now he comes back after her.

A Wilderness Station: Another story based on epistles, it takes us back to the 1850s, and how there is always more to matters than what is mentioned in the open. Simon Herron, had controlled the life of others with him, his wife ( who he gets from an orphanage), and his brother, in a time when the wilds of Canada were still being opened up by those who pioneered to setup life there. The epistles which open these conditions and situations to us are brought to us in 1959, when life, and freedom of choice has greatly improved. In a sense, we are shown how conditions of life, as well as freedom of choice has changed, for the better in just over a hundred years.

Spaceships Have Landed: The spaceships, here, are just incidental, but the main conflict is the choices of a woman, what is she forced into, and how she manages. We have Rhea, who is shown as from a somewhat common background, finds that she'd rather have the more adventurous Wayne than the asexual scion of a large business in the town. Eunice who's the other main character disappears for a night, but then portrayed as saintly, and ends up with the now dumped, but saintly Doud. Rhea and her husband have a rather promiscuous marriage, but is suggested as having lived a rather full life. Billy Doud and Wayne doesn't fall out, and are shown as best friends even when they meet at a later stage in life. Open secrets, then is more of a theme for the complete collection, besides being a short story here.

Vandals: Here we find a brother, sister pair having their revenge of sorts, against a man who had molested them in their childhood. While the now recently deceased molester, was living with a member of the Doud family ( the Doud family we find in many a story in this collection ), she is the ridicule of her husband, a situation which she tolerates patiently. Ladner, is portrayed as the hermit, who will not tolerate to have his way with anyone who walks into his "hermitage" - maybe a self realization of the damage he knows is capable of. Bea Doud, who we find is writing a letter to now grown up brother-sister pair, never sends it - a suggestion that she's aware of what happened back then, and what happened to Ladner's house recently -another open secret as it were.
